Being a Consultant comes with its pros & cons. The freedom to choose the projects you work on is great. There are clients who understand the work it takes to set up proper HR strategies and processes & pay you well. However, there are times when you have to take up multiple projects to keep your kitchen fire going. This may mean burning the midnight oil at times. All days won’t be the same. It’s best to prioritise your tasks, manage time well (Eisenhower matrix) & make sure one has time carved out for personal things like exercise, meal time, family, recreation. You could ask for Remote work to save on travel time. Listen to music or podcasts as you drive. Walk while you answer the phone. Slip in a phone call to family during meal time.

I am a solopreneur and intend to stay that way. My business is HR Advising for small businesses. The only person who cares about my "self-care" and is in a position to actually do something about it is me. So, if I don't feel like taking care of myself, then I make that decision. But for this argument, I've built my entire practice on scalability. My offers, my schedule, and I paid a coach thousands of dollars to help me figure that out.

Self-care has been a recurring theme for me, especially post-COVID-19, as well-being now includes physical, mental, and social health. Over the past five+ years as an HR consultant, I’ve occasionally juggled training projects and personal coaching simultaneously, making self-care essential for meeting milestones and honing commitments. Reflecting on my experience, here are three tactics that worked for me and might inspire you: 1) Delegate Effectively: Trusting my team lightens my workload and fosters collaboration. 2) Stay Disciplined: Wellness activities like workouts or journaling keep me balanced. 3) Celebrate Wins: Recognizing achievements fuels motivation and underscores the value of self-care. Hope it could help you to some extent!
