    💡 Industry Insight: What’s holding businesses back from IT modernisation? IT modernisation is the process of updating an organisation's IT infrastructure, practices and systems to keep up with emerging technologies. As technology continues to advance at pace, it’s a process that many businesses are currently undergoing to stay ahead of their competitors. When done correctly, this process can bring a range of benefits to an organisation from enhanced efficiency and cost savings through to an improved customer experience. But if this is an inevitable process, what’s holding business leaders back? A recent report from Rocket Software surveyed over 300 IT decision makers, asking for details on their IT modernisation journeys. The commons obstacles reported were: 💻 Rewriting applications is a resource heavy process An important element of IT modernisation is modernising legacy applications to work more efficiently, sometimes in new environments. It is such a priority that nearly one-fifth (18%) of modernisation budgets are allocated to rewriting applications. In practice, application rewrite projects have a high failure rate and often multiple attempts requiring substantial resources. 🔐 Security risks are high When modernising IT infrastructure and applications, security breaches and vulnerabilities are a major concern for organisations. 41% of IT decision-makers pointed to concerns about security risks as the biggest obstacle on their journey. This factor can often present issues with stakeholders and prevent projects getting off the ground. 🤝 Modernisation can temporarily hinder productivity When challenges arise, they have the potential to disrupt the day-to-day operations of a business, meaning productivity can decrease while essential works take place. Almost half (44%) of decision-makers believe modernisation obstacles have delayed their previously planned timelines, while a third of respondents stated these problems led to reduced productivity. 👉 Although these challenges can’t always be avoided, knowing when they may occur can help you manage any disruption.
