World AMR Awareness Week: November 18-24 💊 Hey everyone! This Antibiotic Awareness Week, I want to spotlight a critical issue: the misuse of antibiotics like azithromycin, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin. These medications are often used when not needed, leading to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). By taking these drugs without proper medical advice, we're making it harder to treat infections in the future. Before attending the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) Webinar and a workshop by Superheroes Against Superbugs on Antimicrobial Resistance, I didn't realize the severity of this issue. It's eye-opening and alarming. Let's commit to using antibiotics responsibly and only when prescribed. Together, we can combat AMR! #AntibioticAwarenessWeek #AMR #OneHealth #GlobalHealth #WAAW2024 #USAAW24 #WHO #WOAH #UNEP #FAO

Ahead of #WorldAMRWeek, we had the privilege of hosting two impactful #AMRFrontline workshops for medical students in Karnataka! 🚑 National Centre for Biological Sciences, APSI-India, Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India 📍 At Sri Siddartha Medical College, Tumkur (80 km from Bangalore), we welcomed over 60 final-year students, and at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, Bangalore, 130+ students joined us for an engaging learning experience. The workshops featured thought-provoking discussions, insightful talks, and interactive sessions that sparked meaningful conversations about the pressing challenge of Antibiotic Resistance. 🌍💊 🌟 Workshop Highlights 🌟 Dr. Shivranjani Moharir Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India delved into city-wide AMR patterns using wastewater metagenomics and emphasized the need for cross-sector collaboration. Dr. Natraj @(SSMC, Tumkur) warned: "Arise, awake, or face a future without antibiotics." Dr. Shamily PB HaystackAnalytics made a powerful parallel, likening AMR's ripple effect to Oppenheimer’s bomb: "Bad bugs, no drugs." Dr. Arati Ramesh Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India highlighted the urgent need for action on AMR, stressing that without new antibiotics in the pipeline, a One Health approach is critical. Dr. Asima Banu Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute shared insights on infection control in hospitals and the role of global travel in spreading infections. Dr. Rakesh Mishra Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India, APSI-India presented groundbreaking findings from wastewater surveillance, showing significantly higher AMR levels in hospital settings than in the community. These workshops reinforced the urgency of addressing AMR, not just as a healthcare issue but as a global challenge requiring collaboration across sectors. Together, we can make strides in combating #AMR! #AMRAwareness #OneHealth #GlobalHealth #HealthcareTraining #AntibioticResistance #PublicHealth #MedicalEducation #StudentEngagement
