No preservatives, no problem – keep food safe without a fridge. Aseptic packaging revolutionised the way we preserve food and beverages by ensuring products are sterile without the need for preservatives. But how does this process work, what must be done to both the package and the product, and how is such packaging filled? So far discussions at #COP29 have underscored a fact: we are in the age of implementation. And, as Peter Bakker mentioned, businesses are welcomed to the discussion, but nothing will change if we don’t put people at the centre of this agenda. With food systems only accounting for 4% of climate finance, while contributing 30% of GHG emissions annually*, there is a gap in financing this sector, which needs to be addressed. And with the upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions submission on the horizon, governments have a unique chance to integrate comprehensive food systems policies across the agri-food chains. This must include the “hidden middle” – the crucial link between farms and consumers – where targeted investments can foster food systems transformation and simultaneously strengthen food security. This is particularly true for SMEs, which account for many of the sector’s businesses. By equipping food manufacturers with targeted national-level financial incentives, including grants and concessional loans, they can invest in new solutions which can help to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy and water use, and food waste. Equally important, they can opt for upgrading installed equipment, to optimise food production, while reducing resource use. Improving performance is vital for reaching sustainability goals, as efficiency means improved sustainability and reduction of food loss and waste. We have discussed these opportunities with industry and government representatives during first week of COP29, here some food for thoughts: ➡️ Ali Badarneh: “It’s time to start treating food systems as industrial systems” ➡️ Elnur Aliyev: “We need to consider the ecosystem that surrounds the food value chain, not only the food systems per se. For you to analyse the river you have to analyse the basin” ➡️ Lars Holmquist: “We need to think beyond our own roles if we want to unlock the ‘hidden middle’. Let’s work together to make this transformation happen” *Source: https://bit.ly/48UpYx1 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3YT4YSF

Increasing the usage of renewable and recycled resources in packaging is key if we are to realise material circularity. To scale up the adoption of certified recycled polymers in food packaging, we need collective action across the entire system and enabling legislation.
