Why are cancer cells so resistant to chemotherapy? Funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, Triantafyllos Stylianopoulos’s team at the University of Cyprus is applying cutting-edge bioengineering and biology methods to investigate the intracellular mechanisms behind “mechanoresistance”. The ERC funds top researchers in Europe, of any nationality, helping them pursue great ideas at frontiers of knowledge.
About us
Set up in 2007 by the European Union, the European Research Council (ERC) aims to stimulate scientific excellence in Europe by encouraging competition for funding between the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age from anywhere in the world. As part of Horizon Europe, the EU programme for research and innovation for 2021 to 2027, the ERC has a total budget of over €16 billion. The ERC has an 'investigator-driven', 'bottom-up' approach, which allows researchers to identify new opportunities in any field of research (Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities). On the sole basis of excellence, the ERC provides attractive long-term funding to individual top scientists and their teams to pursue ground-breaking research. The funded projects are expected to lead to scientific advances and to set clear and inspirational targets for frontier research across the world. By supporting the brightest minds, the ERC grants help to bring about new and unpredictable scientific and technological discoveries in Europe.

Only a few days are left of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, taking place in Baku, and there is still no agreement on a new climate finance goal. In the midst of all this, ERC-funded research has revealed, for the first time, how a major Antarctic ice shelf has experienced increased melting over the past four decades due to warming ocean waters. The research, which stemmed from an unexpected discovery when an autonomous Seaglider became stuck under the Ross Ice Shelf, suggests that this melting process is likely to intensify as climate change continues to drive ocean warming. Innovative chemistry is transforming the storage of life-saving biologics, such as insulin and cancer treatments. Matthew Gibson’s team at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology is developing antifreeze-inspired polymers to protect these medicines from cold stress—no extreme cooling required! ❄️ Inspired by nature’s survivors, like Arctic fish, Gibson’s research uses machine learning to identify molecules that stabilise sensitive therapies. With these breakthroughs, essential treatments could soon be more accessible globally, even in areas without refrigeration. From room-temperature storage to durable protein gels, Gibson's ERC-funded is paving the way for healthcare advancements that are resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective. Calling on AI systems’ providers, businesses, national authorities, academia, research institutions, and civil society! Take part in the consultation concerning future guidelines on AI Act prohibitions and AI system definition. This initiative will help gather additional practical examples to feed into the guidelines and provide further clarity on the aspects and use cases that pose unacceptable risks under the AI Act. Your contribution will help shape robust frameworks against prohibited AI practices, thus ensuring a future where technology serves people, not the other way around. 🌍 While #COP29 is happening in Azerbaijan, we turn our attention to one of the key elements in climate change: forests. Forests are often praised for their capacity to help combat global warming, yet they are less commonly known as a precious source to tackle another pressing issue: food security. In the #EUFunded project FORESTDIET, Laura Rasmussen and her team at Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen are researching the impact of forests on people's diet in two African countries. Contrary to current tendencies towards the destruction of forests in order to create agricultural land, forests provide valuable food supplies and should therefore also be preserved for the sake of food security. It's the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims #WDoR2024. Current research models are not able to produce reliable results for questions policymakers ask about how changes in travel patterns and road traffic danger might influence injuries. James Woodcock develops models to help understand the health impacts of changes to how we travel, and how such changes might occur. Find out more about his work at the MRC Epidemiology Unit 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQvZhsW6 #FrontierResearch World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
